“There is no such thing as a little garlic.” – Arthur Baer

When to plant Garlic?  Garlic is planted in the fall, we are a zone 5 and  plant the last week of October.  Garlic should be planted 4 weeks before a hard freeze in your area.

How much garlic do you need?  Plant cloves 6'' apart. Chesnok Red has about 14 cloves per bulb.  One pound of Chesnok Red will give you about 98 cloves to plant. Music has 3 to 5 cloves per bulb, giving you about 28 cloves to plant.

Good soil is important for a good crop.  Well draining loose soil rich in organic matter is ideal, with neutral to slightly acidic pH.

Fertilizer should be used only to moderate amounts to aid plants health and growth. Nitrogen stimulates growth, however you should test your soil before adding anything.

How much water? Healthy Growth of garlic bulb and plant there should be ample water, but not to much that the soil is saturated and the bulb is sitting in water.  If soil is dry during planting time, it should be watered after to ensure the root system has enough moisture to begin growing.

Weeds should be hand pulled or hoe'd between plants. Weeds above ground shadow the growth of the garlic while the roots of the weeds compete with the growth of the garlic.
